THE PROJECT:
Design a mosaic sign for the new Media Arts Council Arts Center.
Role: Designer
THE CHALLENGE:
The Media Arts Council recently opened up a brand new Arts Center in downtown Media, PA. They wanted a large mosaic sign to hang on their building to mark their new space, based on the signs in the NYC subway. They wanted something colorful, while also maintaining their brand identity - which traditionally uses a black color scheme. This was achieved by creating the lettering of the sign in mosaics based on the MAC brand / logo font and in preserving the black and white at the center of the sign.
This project is a stop-gap project until they can work with a local artist to create a permanent installation art piece / sign, most likely made of stained glass.
REFLECTION:
This was a challenging and exciting project for me. It's unlike anything I've worked on before and I nervous about taking it on and doing the sign justice. It was designed in Illustrator using a pattern library to build the various layers of the sign. Due to the timeline and budget constraints (not unlimited hours for this one!) of the project, I purchased a mosaic tile builder and taught myself how to use the built in patterns in a variety of ways. The client is happy with how the sign turned out and I'm glad that I was able to expand my skills and work on something new and different!
Thank you for your message. I'll be back with you shortly. -Andrea, Miller Tan Creative
